Archangels is a prominent business angel syndicate, which has been at the forefront of early stage investing in Scotland for more than two decades. Our members invest in and mentor promising start-up and early stage companies from Scotland’s vibrant technology and life sciences sectors.
Sarah joined Archangels in March 2016 as the Chief Investment Officer and has direct responsibility for number of the portfolio companies. She will also oversee the investment strategy.
Niki joined Archangels in 2011 and has direct responsibility for a number of the portfolio companies. Niki recently led our investment into Cytomos, which is developing a proprietary technology which aims to enable non-specialist users to perform quantitative cell analysis for research or clinical diagnostics.
Shaolei joined the Archangels' team as an Investment Executive in March 2017. Her role is to support the Investment Team, particularly in relation to book-building, management of share cap tables, due diligence and management of the investment portal.
Lindsay joined Archangels in December 2015. She is responsible for finance, company secretarial and event management activities as well as the day to day running of the office.
David joined Archangels in 2014. He is responsible for the management of the Archangels’ business, including all operational aspects and also has direct responsibility for a number of the portfolio companies.
Eric is the current chair of Archangels. He joined the Board in 2000 and has invested in every new investment and rights issue from that date. He is a director of Oregon Timber Frame Limited. Eric is a director of Rutterford Holdings Limited and a partner in Eric Young and Co, Chartered Surveyors. He also manages various property SPVs and investment vehicles and is actively involved with several Scottish-based charities and Trusts.
Geoff was the Chief Executive of Cala from 1974 until his retirement in 2009. He led the Management buyout and subsequent sale of the business. He was also Chairman of McCarthy & Stone and was for many years on the boards of Standard Life and Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust. He is a past president of the UK Homebuilders Federation. Geoff joined the board of Archangels in 2011
Mike joined the board of Archangels in 2015. Having been called to the English Bar in 1987, Michael joined Baillie Gifford & Co. in 1989 and became a partner in 1998. He instigated investment in Latin America during the 1990s, headed the firm’s European Department from 2003 to 2008 and thereafter co-managed a global investment strategy. From 1998, until his retirement from the firm in 2014, he was the manager of Mid Wynd International Investment Trust PLC.
Mike Rutterford is a serial entrepreneur with a 40-year career as a business angel and in property investment. Educated in Edinburgh, in his 20s he launched Stuart Wyse Ogilivie and over a ten-year period developed the estate agency into the biggest in Scotland – subsequently selling to General Accident in 1987. He co-founded Archangels with business partner Barry Sealey in 1992. In June 2010, Mike received an Honorary Doctorate in Business Administration from Edinburgh Napier University.
Alastair is a Chartered Accountant and is Chairman at Dawnfresh Seafoods Ltd and Dovecot Studios Ltd. He is Deputy Chairman of the Fettes Trust, and a past president of the Royal Highland and Agricultural Society and the British Frozen Foods Federation. Alastair is also a Director of several other companies. Alastair joined the board of Archangels in 2009.
John stepped down as CEO of Archangels in September 2015, having held the role for ten years. He continues to act as an adviser to Archangels and sits on the boards of three Archangels' portfolio companies, namely MGB Biopharma, Indigo Lighthouse and NCTech. He is also on the advisory boards of Amadeus & Angels Seed Fund and Seraphim Capital and is a director of Northern 3 VCT PLC.
